Worship Leading: Reflect by Glenn Kaiser

Worship Leading: Reflect

Do we reflect God: Father, Son, Spirit as the moon (with no light of it’s own) reflects the sun?

As we lead worship are we not at times staring at our own reflection as in a mirror? I sure have at various moments over the years!

What is the content of our worship lyrics – do they mentor our hearers in considering God and the things of God as pertains to His Name, but not just His Name but His actual Word?

Certainly those of us leading worship in any gathering and indeed any kind, any “style” of Christian congregation or for that matter even in the street in front of mostly those who are not following Jesus we need to reflect.

Selah, pause, stop and think about it.

I am more and more convinced the Holy Spirit is so obviously our deepest need not only to bless and comfort but at times deliver prophetic messages via our lyrics, and yes, bless in terms of comfort but not merely that.

Can we not safely say God the Holy Spirit teaches? Yes, Jesus calls Him Counselor. Does He not teach? Jesus says He does. He indeed is also Comforter. We are optional. If we will not love God (and the people) with our heart, soul, mind and strength He will not cease His deep work in them or us. In other words the Spirit may be quenched or grieved (note apostle Paul’s comments on this) but He is not and cannot be bound nor stopped. He is not at the mercy of the Church so to speak!

REPORT THIS AD

I cannot escape the fact that worship leaders are by default, teachers whether or not we have the spiritual gift of teaching.

In one of my morning devotional times as I’ve been slowly reading through the amazing lyrics of Psalms this leapt out at me:

David in Psalm 138.2 wrote and sang along with the Nation of Israel in worship- “I will bow down toward Your holy temple And give thanks to Your name for Your mercy and Your truth; For You have made Your word great according to all Your name.” NASB

“I will bow down [in worship] toward Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word together with Your name.” AMP

“I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything.” NRSV

If we meditate on this single verse from the Psalm (and the entire Psalm is amazing!!) God’s love and mercy are directly linked with His truth, his truth with His Name and His Word. Are the songs we’re singing, the worship sets we bring to serve others doing this?

What are we reflecting on and thus pointing others to, enabling them to consider what GOD directs us to consider in accord with what HE has spoken?

There are of course practical matters such as rehearsal, tuning instruments, fresh guitar strings, the text of a sermon about to be delivered and in one church that your shirt is buttoned while in another that it isn’t ðŸ™‚ But all of these things pale in the accent of Scripture which of course David was writing, though He may or may not have known he was writing such.

I suggest to you what the Lord continues to speak to my own mind and heart: we need to reflect!
