Natural Fruit Chuck Smith

Natural Fruit

August 17, 2020

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
— John 15:5

People would like to produce fruit apart from the vine. They think they might squeeze out a fruit or two by living good lives or by becoming better people. But the fact is, apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. It is only as we abide in Him that the Holy Spirit begins to form fruit in us—naturally.

What fruit does the Spirit produce? The fruit of the Spirit is agape love—deep, fervent love—love that suffers long and is kind; love that does not envy, does not exalt itself, does not behave in an unseemly manner, love that does not get cliquish, love that does not seeks its own. This is an amaz- ing love. It’s love that is not easily provoked, love that doesn’t think evil of others, love that bears all burdens, love that believes all things, love that never fails.

If God’s Spirit dwells in you, then the natural result will be the fruit of agape love. We are impatient for that fruit. We would like to plant an apple tree today and eat the apples tomorrow. But fruit does not grow overnight. Do not be impatient with God and with the Holy Spirit as He develops fruit in your life. It will develop in His time—and what a beautiful day that will be when you bring forth fruit.

Thank You, Father, for the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit. Lord, teach us to be patient as the fruit of Your Spirit begins to develop in our lives.
AMEN.

Two Questions Chuck Smith

Two Questions

July 20, 2020

But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” — Mark 4:40

The disciples had good reasons to be fearful: a fierce storm had come upon them, waves sloshed over the bow, and the boat was beginning to sink. And yet, the Lord slept through the storm.

When trouble comes upon us, overwhelming us with its intensity, threaten- ing to sink us, it can sometimes seem that the Lord isn’t concerned with our predicament. Our calls go unanswered and we wonder why the Lord isn’t help- ing, why our situation isn’t changing.

We never face a storm alone. The Lord is with us—always. And when Jesus is on board, there’s no need to fear.

Jesus had two questions. After asking, “Why are you so fearful?” He then asked, “How is it that you have no faith?” When our problems seem big, our faith can get small. It was fear that caused the disciples to lose their faith.

It is glorious to know that our heavenly Father is watching over us, that He loves us, that He cares for us, and that He is in control. When we don’t under- stand what is happening around us, we can still trust Jesus. We don’t need to fear. Jesus is on board, He is able to calm the storm, and He will bring us safely into that eternal harbor.

Father, we thank You for the peace of Christ that passes human understanding, that in the midst of the storm our hearts can be at rest because our trust is in You. IN JESUS’ PRECIOUS NAME, AMEN.

Living Waters Chuck Smith

Living Waters

August 10, 2020

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water
that I shall give him will never thirst.” — John 4:13-14

Deep within every man there is an intense thirst for God. As David said, “My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1).

Man tries to satisfy that thirst in different ways and through different experiences—drugs, alcohol, or, like the Samaritan woman, relationships. But those things can’t quench the thirst for God.

If you drink of the water from the wells of life, you will thirst again. It would be wise to write that over each of your ambitions. “Go ahead, drink of that water. But you will thirst again.” Write that over every material thing you hope to possess—the new car, new home, boat, or whatever. Write that over every goal of your life. Achieve it, but you will surely thirst again.

When Jesus talked to the Samaritan woman about the living water, He was talking about the only thing that can possibly satisfy the deep thirst of the soul— a relationship with God.

Are you thirsty today? Forget the world’s water. Drink deeply of the living water—and find the satisfaction you long for.

Lord, we thank You that You made a way for us to satisfy the deep thirst of our soul. May we come, may we drink,
and find that satisfaction that our soul is seeking. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.
